Public Works Projects

Public Works often engages in long-term projects in order to improve La Conner, from building a park gazebo, to replacing ageing infrastructure.

Public Works recently completed pedestrian improvements to Washington Street and Road Street. Please click here for the full project plans.

In 2024, Public Works received a grant from the Transportation Improvement Board for sidewalk construction and pedestrian improvements along Maple Ave and Road Street.

The Town of La Conner prepared a Safe Routes to School plan in 2018. This plan identified the two pedestrian sidewalk gaps addressed by this project. The plan also listed goals of improving crosswalk safety and traffic calming measures. The Town Council, after taking public comment, also prioritized the included projects.

The project consists of four sites:

1. Washington Street - add 460 Linear Feet (LF) of pedestrian sidewalk to north side of road to fill gap from Maple Ave to Whatcom Street. This includes an ADA ramp on west extent and a Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) crossing at Maple Ave intersection, along with minor stormwater improvements to address the channelization of runoff created by the sidewalk addition.

2. Road Street - add 250 LF of pedestrian sidewalk to north side of road to fill gap between 6th Street and Maple Ave. This includes ADA ramps on east and west extents and minor stormwater improvements..

3. Maple Ave intersection with Rainier - add a RRFB at Maple crosswalk.

4. Maple Ave intersection with Caledonia Street - add a RRFB at Maple crosswalk.

The pedestrian sidewalk portions will complete a continuous sidewalk path through the neighborhood and link the school, grocery store, library, bank and pharmacy.  The RRFBs will improve crosswalk safety and provide a traffic calming effect to Maple Ave.
