Flood-Related Evacuation Notices Lifted in Skagit County; Skagit River Now Below Flood Stage

All flood-related evacuation notices in Skagit County have been lifted due to the decreased risk of flooding. Residents are allowed to return home if they can do so safely. However, it is important to remain cautious and keep the following safety reminders in mind:

  • Respect all road closure signs and consult the live Skagit County road closure map
  • Do not drive through any water covering the roadways.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater, as it may be contaminated, contain dangerous debris, and hide other hazards. Additionally, underground or downed power lines can electrify the water.

River levels remain high, and a flood watch remains in effect for the Skagit River through Friday, December 19, 2025. Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor weather forecasts closely and be ready to take action if additional flooding should occur.

The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management is gathering information from residents and businesses regarding the damage and losses incurred during the recent flooding event. This information will help identify those who may be eligible for state disaster assistance.

It is important for all residents and businesses to submit the form, even if they experienced only minor damage and do not anticipate needing assistance. The deadline for submitting forms is Friday, December 26, 2025.

UPDATE

2:00 pm, December 15, 2025

Additional rounds of severe weather will visit Skagit County the week of December 15

Heavy rain and strong winds, combined with already saturated and unstable soil from last week's flooding, can be expected over the next several days.  Last week’s event set a record on the Skagit River, of 37.4 feet at the Mount Vernon gauge (the Mount Vernon gauge is located just downstream from the Mount Vernon – Burlington bridge.)  The forecast as of 11:38 a.m. on December 15 is for the river level at this location to reach 31.17 feet at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, and 32.61 feet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 18.  Major flood stage at this location is 32 feet, and so the river will remain high through Thursday.

While we are hopeful that the Skagit River will remain within its banks and that the levee system will continue to protect La Conner, safety must always come first.  La Conner residents who live east of the Swinomish Channel should remain prepared, and have a GO bag prepared and ready to go.  In the event of a levee breach, the La Conner Fire Department will sound an alert through a long blast on the fire engine air horns.  Now is a good time to plan your evacuation route, and make sure your vehicle has adequate fuel to leave on a moment’s notice.  Please remember to check on your friends and family members who may need assistance.

Please take take every reasonable precaution and stay safe out there!

UPDATE

11:43 a.m., December 11, 2025

NOAA ran a forecast for the river elevation at the Mount Vernon Skagit River gauge at 8:41 Thursday morning, that predicts a river elevation of 39.10’ occurring at approx. 10:00 a.m. Friday.  See, https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/MVEW1 The flood of record at this gauge was at an elevation of 37.4’.  At the same time, NOAA ran a probability model of the elevation at this gauge at 8:12 Thursday morning which shows a greater than 90% chance that the crest will be approx. 38’ at the MV gauge.  The current event is significant.  That said, and based on current information available, the Town recommends that residents be prepared to evacuate, but wait to evacuate until directed to do so.  Residents should already have prepared a “Go Bag,” https://mil.wa.gov/asset/5ff4b7fa107e8 , filled their vehicle with fuel, and consulted the evacuation maps listed on this web site.

The dikes protecting the town are being monitored, and later this afternoon will be intensively and continuously monitored by those familiar with diking operations.  We are confident that the dike districts are properly performing their monitoring activities.

In the event of a dike breach, the Fire Department will notify residents by sounding continuous long blasts on the fire engines’ air horns.  Residents will be directed to safe, refuge areas such as Maple Hall or the Garden Club, and will have at least an hour to move out of harm’s way.  While we remain confident that emergency evacuation will not be necessary, it is important for residents to have formulated a plan for themselves to keep safe.

We look forward to returning to a normal state of affairs on the morning of December 13.  Please stay safe.
